Watering Basics

Overwatering is the #1 plant killer. Master the finger test, bottom watering, seasonal adjustments, and water quality.

Why Watering Matters

Water is the lifeblood of your plant, but too much or too little can be fatal. Most houseplant deaths are caused by overwatering, not drought.

The Finger Test

Before watering, push your finger 2 inches into the soil. If it feels damp, wait. If it's dry, water.

Signs of Overwatering

  • Yellowing lower leaves
  • Soggy, mushy stems at the base
  • Mould on soil surface
  • Root rot (brown, mushy roots)

Signs of Underwatering

  • Dry, crispy leaf edges
  • Drooping or wilting despite good light
  • Soil pulling away from pot edges

Seasonal Adjustments

Spring/Summer — Water more frequently as plants are actively growing.

Autumn/Winter — Reduce watering significantly. Most plants are semi-dormant.
