Soil & Potting Mix

Not all potting mix is equal. Understand drainage, aeration, and organic content — and build the perfect substrate.

Why Soil Matters

Soil anchors roots, retains moisture, and delivers nutrients. The wrong mix affects all three.

Customising by Plant Type

Succulents & Cacti — Add 50% perlite for extreme drainage.

Tropical Aroids — Chunky mix with orchid bark and perlite.

Ferns — Extra coconut coir to retain moisture.

Orchids — Dedicated orchid bark, not potting soil.

Key Amendments

  • Perlite — Improves drainage and aeration
  • Orchid bark — Creates air pockets
  • Coconut coir — Sustainable moisture retention
  • Worm castings — Natural slow-release fertiliser

When to Repot

Repot when roots circle the pot bottom or emerge from drainage holes. Spring is best. Size up by only 1–2 inches.
