When & How to Repot

Know when your plant needs more room and how to move it without shock. Timing, pot selection, size, and aftercare.

Signs It's Time to Repot

  • Roots growing out of drainage holes
  • Roots circling on the soil surface
  • Plant drying out much faster than usual
  • Growth has stalled

When to Repot

Spring is ideal. Plants have maximum energy to establish in new soil.

Choosing the Right Pot

Size: Only 1–2 inches wider. Too large = overwatering risk.

Material:

  • Terracotta — Breathes well, dries faster
  • Ceramic/glazed — Retains moisture longer
  • Plastic — Lightest option

Step-by-Step

  1. 1Water 24 hours before repotting
  2. 2Gently tip the plant out
  3. 3Loosen the root ball
  4. 4Inspect roots — trim dead or rotted ones
  5. 5Add fresh mix to the base
  6. 6Place plant, fill around roots
  7. 7Water lightly, place in indirect light

Aftercare

Some wilting is normal for 1–2 weeks. Hold off fertilising for 4–6 weeks.
