Humidity & Temperature

Most tropical houseplants crave humidity your home doesn't naturally have. Create the right microclimate.

Why Humidity Matters

Most houseplants originate in rainforests where humidity is 60–90%. Homes average 30–50%.

How to Increase Humidity

Pebble tray — Fill a tray with pebbles and water just below the surface. Place pot on top.

Grouping plants — Plants release moisture through transpiration, creating a humid microclimate.

Humidifier — Most effective. A small cool-mist humidifier makes a dramatic difference.

Temperature

Most houseplants prefer 18–27°C (65–80°F).

Avoid:

  • Cold draughts from windows in winter
  • Direct heat from radiators
  • Air conditioning vents blowing directly on plants
  • Temperatures below 10°C for most tropicals
