Fertilising Your Plants

When, what, and how much to feed your plants. Understand NPK ratios and why less is almost always more.

Understanding NPK

Fertiliser labels show three numbers:

  • N (Nitrogen) — Promotes leafy, green growth
  • P (Phosphorus) — Supports root development and flowering
  • K (Potassium) — Overall plant health

A balanced 10-10-10 works for most foliage plants.

When to Fertilise

Spring–Summer: Every 2–4 weeks with liquid fertiliser.

Autumn–Winter: Stop or reduce to once every 6–8 weeks at half strength.

Signs of Problems

Under-fertilised: Pale leaves, slow growth.

Over-fertilised: Brown tips, white crust on soil, wilting despite moist soil.

If you suspect over-fertilising, flush the soil thoroughly with plain water.
